Explore #162: Kraftwerk V – May 2016

Explore #2 of ‘The Picnics & Palaces Tour’

After our permission visit of Kraftwerk Plessa it was time to get down to some ‘proper’ exploring at another huge decaying powerplant with an equally impressive control room…

History
This large coal-fired powerplant was built in the 1930s, and expanded substantially after the Second World War to help meet East Germany’s growing energy needs. As with many other such plants it closed down in the 1990s. Today it sits empty, partially stripped and decaying, its future uncertain.

Our Explore
Access was not particularly easy, but with a good amount of teamwork and determination we found a way inside and carefully navigated the treacherous dark depths of the plant, finally making our way up into the vast turbine hall which once housed more than 10 turbines but is now stripped out. As the sun was setting and what little light remained was fading fast we made it our priority to find the main control room. It took quite a lot of hunting, but eventually I turned a corner to this…

All too soon we had to drag ourselves away from the amazing control room and find our way back to the huge turbine hall, which I entered just as the setting sun was starting to shine through the broken windows at the end of the hall…

We finished off our explore in the dark basement beneath turbine hall, and I grabbed a quick shot of these giant (valves?) before we made our way out in the last of the dusk light and headed off to find our hotel for the night and some much-needed beers.

Thanks for visiting.
